Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions
  • In search of a skilled graphic designer in Dundee? Understanding the specific design needs of your project is crucial. Graphic design comprises various disciplines, and finding the right specialist is key. It might not be the right choice to hire a web designer to work on brand identity work, or a print designer to work on a digital project. Based in Dundee, I specialise in brand identity, design for print and report design. Collaborating with specialists ensures the best outcomes. A professional designer will be more than capable of collaborating with designers in other fields ensuring seamless project execution.

  • Communication and collaboration skills are key. A good graphic designer doesn’t just have mastery of technical skills, they should demonstrate an ability to empathise and understand a client’s needs. They actively listen, ask the right questions and conduct thorough research to ensure they are tackling a project in the most appropriate way possible — this might even result in challenging the brief. A good designer should be focused on problem solving, not just making aesthetically pleasing graphics. I prioritise understanding the project needs to create designs that resonate and solve challenges creatively.

  • A professional graphic designer can enhance your brand's visual identity by going beyond just creating a logo. While a logo serves as a key element, developing a comprehensive visual identity system involves a strategic approach to represent your brand consistently across various platforms and touchpoints. I specialise in creating visual identity systems that encompass colour schemes, typography, imagery styles, and design elements. By aligning these elements, I create a visual language that resonates with your target market, establishing a strong brand presence and makes a connection with your audience.

  • Yes, you can make something that resembles good design. But remember, Canva makes you a designer as much as a microwave makes you a chef. Working with a professional designer opens up a world of expertise, creativity, and strategic thinking. Design is not just about aesthetics; it's about problem-solving, understanding and communication. Professional designers possess extensive knowledge of design principles, trends and techniques that go far beyond template-based design tools. Working with a designer brings a collaborative partnership.

  • No, I don’t think so. Show me a machine with curiosity and I might think differently. For creatives, curiosity is currency, we are driven by it. Let the machines do the technical work. I’m excited to think about what we can achieve when we aren’t devoting hours to technical tasks. Time can be freed up for soft skills like exploring imagination, idea generation and developing relationships — all of which cultivate creativity.

  • What’s ‘expensive’ can be pretty subjective. I aim to offer value in every project regardless of the number of £s you send my way. While perceptions of 'expensive' vary, I aim to deliver effective results that are appropriate to the scale of the project. The best way to start is to reach out.

Design Services
  • I primarily provide graphic design services for start-ups, small businesses, and individuals. Take a look at my portfolio to get an idea of the range of projects I've worked on in the past.

  • I'm based in Dundee, Scotland. I moved here to study at the University of Dundee's Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, but I have roots in Aberdeenshire.

  • I don’t use a flat hourly rate. Instead, after a discussion of the brief, I put a fixed cost to the project. Removing a strict time constraint encourages dialogue during the development of a project and allows me to work freely towards a suitable solution. I offer customised design solutions without hourly billing.

  • I work on projects valued at £50 and above. The little projects are as important as the big ones. I haven’t forgotten that! I understand that some projects may seem small but are equally significant in contributing to your brand or business. I ensure each project, irrespective of size, receives the same level of commitment. I aim to provide value in every project I undertake.

  • Once the final payment for the project is completed, the ownership rights of the finalised project are transferred to the client. As a professional courtesy, I typically request the right of association with the completed work, allowing me to showcase the project in my portfolio to highlight the collaboration and display the creative work achieved. However, I appreciate this isn’t always possible when projects contain sensitive information.

  • Simply get in touch through my contact form and I'll reach out to schedule a chat to get things started. Afterwards, I'll prepare a written proposal to outline the scope of the project and the associated cost.
